Design Life

Design Life is a podcast about design and side projects for motivated creators. It was born after your hosts, two serial side project addicts, saw a gap in the podcast market for a conversational show about design and the issues young creatives face, that was hosted by two females. This show aims to tackle the big issues designers face like getting paid, overcoming a creative block or managing time, to name a few. We want to open up discussion about things we wish we heard people talk about when we were studying, and we want to chat to you about the joys and the frustrations of working in the tech industry by day, and on our passion projects in the rest of our waking hours. We hope that by doing so, Design Life will give you a dose of motivation or inspiration when you need it.

Wool-Shift-Dust does Dune

It might be a wait for season 2 of Silo – but season 2 of Wool-Shift-Dust is here! This season we're getting deep into what makes a good adaptation, with the book many call the most important work of science fiction ever, the unadaptable yet often adapted Dune – from the book to the movies you know and the ones you probably missed, we get into the lore, philosophy, filmmaking, and Sting's winged speedo (we have some laughs, too). Also check out season 1, where you can listen back on our weekly breakdowns of Silo, Apple TV+’s dystopic scifi thriller, from two different perspectives: book reader Elysia, and show only Luke, with spoilers only up to the episode discussed and equivalent parts of the book. Phaedrus by Plato

“For there is no light of justice or temperance, or any of the higher ideas which are precious to souls, in the earthly copies of them: they are seen through a glass, dimly…” Socrates and his earnest friend Phaedrus, enjoying the Athenian equivalent of a lunchtime stroll in the park, exchange views on love and on the power of words, spoken and written. Phaedrus is the most enchanting of Plato’s Erotic dialogues (capitalised in honour of the god). The barefoot philosopher urges an eager young acquaintance – who has allowed his lover’s oratorical skills to impress him overmuch – to re-examine the text of Lysias’s speech in the light of his own exalted (and Platonic) vision of Love. Not long ago this early example of literary dismantling was itself deconstructed by a contemporary sage - Jacques Derrida. The present reader tries to present Socrates as he conceivably was: the chortling, pot-bellied ex-soldier, a flirtatious yet charismatic talker with a serious passion for Truth.
