Call Declined
911: three digits virtually every American knows to dial in case of emergency. But 911 dispatches police, and in a mental health emergency, they can be ineffective, dangerous, even deadly. But there's hope. As of July 16, there’s a new three digit option in town: 988, a 24/7 hotline specifically designed to handle mental health crises. In theory, it’s an opportunity to reimagine what crisis response looks like in America, connecting callers in need to comprehensive mental health, substance use, and suicidal crises services including 24/7 local call centers, mobile crisis teams, and stabilization options. In reality, most states aren’t ready. Why? Because a phone number won’t fix America’s inadequate and underfunded mental health system. Hosted by Stephanie Wittels Wachs, and featuring special correspondent Zak Williams, Call for Help looks at the promise and the perils of 988. We uncover how the system got so messed up in the first place, what crisis response currently looks like in America, and what it will take to do better. From Lemonada and Sozosei Foundation. Supported by The Jed Foundation, NAMI, and The Just Trust.

Scam Secrets
It might look like a perfectly ordinary message. It could come from someone you thought you trusted. Or it could be a phone call that catches you off guard. Whatever the method, the goal is the same. They want your money.
But if you know their secrets, you can spot the red flags before it is too late.
Shari Vahl, who has investigated fraud for the BBC for 20 years, is joined by the criminologist and forensic linguist, Dr Elisabeth Carter, and Alex Wood - a former criminal who now tries to stop scams - to dissect the shadiest techniques criminals use to steal your cash.
In each episode, they dig deep into a different scam, with first-hand accounts from the people targeted, forensic analysis of the techniques and mind games being used - and even secret recordings of the scammers themselves. Scam Secrets will publish weekly from 31 July. Subscribe on BBC Sounds so you never miss an episode. You can also email the Scam Secrets team - tell them which scams you want them to unpick: scamsecrets@bbc.co.uk
The Tavistock: inside the gender clinic
From Tortoise, journalist Polly Curtis tells the story of the Gender Identity Development Service for children and young people at the Tavistock. The Tavi, as it’s known, is the only NHS clinic in England and Wales which treats children suffering from gender dysphoria. Its critics have accused it of fast-tracking young people into changing gender. Its supporters argue it has provided help and support, even a lifeline for some. In a few months time the clinic will close. This is the story of what happened.
