هو الأستاذ عبد السلام بن محمد بن سلام بن عبد الله ، ينتمي إلى أسرة شهيرة في الجنوب تدعى آيت بهي، والتي كان لها صيت وذكر في تاريخ المغرب، وهم أشراف أدارسة. كانت علامات النبوغ والتفوق على موعد مع الغلام الذي ملأ صدره بآيات وسور القرآن العظيم، وهذب لسانه بقواعد اللغة العربية، وصار يقرض الشعر وهو في سن الثانية عشرة. في سنة 1965 وفي غمرة التفوق المهني والارتقاء الاجتماعي، كان الأستاذ على موعد مع تحول كبير عبر عنه لاحقاً في كتاب الإحسان قائلاً: "كنتُ قد شارفت الأربعين عندما تداركني الرؤوف الرحيم بالمؤمنين بهَبة ويقظة، فهام الفؤاد، وغلب التفكير في المبدإ والمعَاد، فوجدتني محمولا على الطلب مدفوعا إليه. كيف السبيل إليك يا رب؟ وعَكفت على كتب القوم، فما منهم إلا من صرفني للبحث عن الرفيق قبل الطريق. بِمن أَستنجد يا رب غيرك؟ وشككت وترددت أهو شرك مع الله؟ لكنني بَعد أن استغرقْت في العبادة والذكر والمجاهدة والتلاوة زمانا تبيّنتُ أن طلب ما عند الله هو غير طلب وجه الله... بعث الأستاذ عبد السلام ياسين سنة 1974 رسالته الشهيرة "الإسلام أو الطوفان" إلى ملك المغرب الراحل الحسن الثاني (1929-1999) مذكراً وموجهاً وناصحاً. وكانت رسالة قوية المعنى والمبنى بالنظر إلى الشروط السياسية المميزة للمرحلة و إلى المضامين التي جاءت بها؛ فأما الظروف العامة التي اكتنفت الحدث فقد صارت معروفة اليوم بسنوات الجمر والرصاص حيث كان الصراع السياسي على أشده بين أقطاب الحقل السياسي: المؤسسة الملكية والجيش والمعارضة الاشتراكية، وكانت اللغة السياسية المهيمنة موسومة بالعنف والاتهام والتخوين. ولعل أبرز مظاهر تلك المرحلة تكرار المحاولات الانقلابية التي ظلت تستهدف حياة الملك مباشرة. وبعد خروجه من السجن، واصل الأستاذ ياسين مسيرة الدعوة إلى الحق والهدى قولا وفعلا، من خلال إلقاء دروس المسجد فكان المنع مرة أخرى، ليتوجه إلى استئناف التأليف في العمل الإسلامي مع المبادرة إلى محاورة سائر الفاعلين في هذا المجال حينئذ. ويبدو أن مبادرة المحاورة والتنسيق التي قادها الأستاذ رفقة عدد من إخوانه لم تجد الاستجابة المأمولة فكان أن توجهوا إلى إعلان تأسيس حركة عرفت ب"أسرة الجماعة" سنة 1981، وحملت شعار " العدل والإحسان فيما بعد. ظل الأستاذ عبد السلام ياسين شغوفاً بطلب العلم من مصادره المتنوعة، وبالمطالعة المتواصلة للكتب والمؤلفات سواء في بيته أو سجنه، في حله أو ترحاله. وكان التأليف معينا لا ينضب لتأسيس فكر إسلامي قادر على التفاعل مع هموم الأمة وحاجاتها المتجددة في الزمان والمكان. وبقي حضور الأستاذ ياسين قويا ومؤثرا من خلال المجالس التي كانت تعقد كل يوم أحد وتبث مباشرة على شبكة الأنترنت عبر موقعه yassine.net، ومن خلال غيرها من المجالس التي دامت سنوات. وقد استمر نشاطه العلمي والدعوي والتربوي إلى أن توفاه الله إلى رحمته يوم الخميس 28 محرم الحرام 1434 الموافق لـ13 دجنبر 2012.
