Paradise Papers: Im Schattenreich der Steueroasen
Die NDR Info Reporter Benedikt Strunz und Philipp Eckstein geben in sieben Folgen im "Paradise Papers"-Podcast Einblicke in ihre Recherchen mit WDR, "SZ" und Journalisten weltweit. "Paradise Papers" - so lautet der Titel einer Recherche von Journalistinnen und Journalisten in aller Welt. Grundlage dafür war ein 1,4 Terabyte großer Datensatz. Darin verborgen: brisante Informationen über die Tricks von Superreichen, Prominenten, Kriminellen und Konzernen, die ihren Besitz verstecken und ihre Steuerzahlungen drastisch senken. Hochspezialisierte Berater helfen ihnen dabei, die Gesetzgebung in Niedrigsteuerländern zu nutzen - moralisch fragwürdig, aber meist legal. An den einjährigen Recherchen zu den "Paradise Papers" waren international fast 400 Journalistinnen und Journalisten aus rund 100 Medien beteiligt, darunter die New York Times, der Guardian und Le Monde. In Deutschland haben Journalisten der Süddeutschen Zeitung, des NDR und des WDR zu den "Paradise Papers" recherchiert. Während die im April 2016 veröffentlichten "Panama Papers" vor allem Steuerhinterziehung, Korruption und andere Verbrechen öffentlich machten, bieten die "Paradise Papers" Einblicke in die Arbeit hochspezialisierter Berater, die komplizierte Konstrukte zur Steuervermeidung ersinnen. Profiteure sind reiche Kunden und Firmen, die zwar die Infrastruktur von Industrieländern wie Deutschland nutzen, sich aber um ihren Anteil an deren Finanzierung drücken. Die dafür angewandten Tricks sind in der Regel legal, doch ihr Ergebnis ähnelt dem der Steuerhinterziehung: Der Gesellschaft entsteht ein enormer Schaden durch nicht bezahlte Steuern.

The familiar pair of red shoes that sparkle as Dorothy skips down the yellow brick road. One of the most famous props in Hollywood movie history, Dorothy’s ruby slippers are a rare collector’s item worth millions. In the summer of 2005, a pair was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in the small town of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. No Place Like Home is a documentary podcast series that follows a classic heist story against the nostalgic backdrop of one of the most famous movies and Hollywood props of all time. We follow the theft from start to finish, and the mystery that still surrounds the events of the stolen ruby slippers to this day. C13Originals, a Cadence13 Studio, teams up with journalist Ariel Ramchandani and editor Seyward Darby to investigate the strange story that dives into small town suspicions between local cops and the FBI, the fraught relationship between Grand Rapids and its most famous daughter, Judy Garland, and brings listeners inside the peculiar world of Hollywood memorabilia and the market for lost and stolen art. Although the shoes were eventually recovered, there are more questions left than answers. We still don’t know who stole the shoes and where they were hiding for nearly 13 years.
